What is the difference between a glossy screen and a non-glossy screen?

Question: I have just purchased a laptop computer and I was expecting it, since it was new, to come with a glossy screen. It came with a non-glossy screen instead. It is the Tecra A8- EZ8512. It has a WXGA TFT-active matrix display. Is this good or not? Which type of screen is better, the glossy one or the dull one?

Answer: The glossy screen is more reflective, so it is more annoying of reflections bother you. But the picture is slightly crisper. The non glossy has a diffusive layer over the top which scatters the reflected light. making reflections much less distinct, but this also scatters the light from the LCD slightly blurring the image a small amount. So, do you want the crispest image, but have to deal with a screen you can shave in, or not to be distracted by what is behind you, but lose a slight sharpness in the image?
